  • Some residents of the Euclid Commons dormitory on Euclid Avenue at East 24th Street had an uncomfortably warm night in their dorms Sunday, April 15, 2012. A combination of unseasonably warm weather and an air conditioner malfunction led some residents to vent on the popular social media site Twitter. The Cauldron file photo

There are two major problems with sports films and television programs - too many cliché endings and a bias toward the male demographic. However, one of the biggest dramas of the summer, "Hit the Floor," appeals to a wide range of viewers while providing many entertaining storylines along the way.
The VH1 show consists of a diverse cast in terms of experience. Veteran actors like Kimberly Elise ("John Q," "The Manchurian Candidate" and "For Colored Girls") and Dean Cain ("Out of Time", "Ripley's Believe It or Not" and "Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman") demonstrate their exceptional intangibles.
Young actresses Taylour Paige, Logan Browning ("Pair of Kings" and "Meet the Browns") and Jonathan McDaniel ("That's So Raven") are able to hold their own on screen with Elise and Cain.
The show revolves around a group of Los Angeles Devils cheerleaders who, in many cases, are more popular than many of the athletes on the team. Ahsha Hayes (Paige) is a young dance prodigy who is at the mercy of her envious team captain, Jelena Howard (Browning).
In an environment fueled by temptation, she finds it hard to stay loyal to her boyfriend German Vega (McDaniel) and mother Sloane (Elise).
She later finds out head coach Pete Davenport (Cain) is her biological father after having a one night stand with her mother. Ahsha and Sloane's relationship is quite volatile throughout the entire season.
"Hit the Floor," having just been renewed for a second season, is a refreshing breakaway for VH1 from the bland reality shows it has been previously known for.
One can hope that this leads to more scripted programming down the road for the network.
