Whether it's the urbane décor, warm sophisticated atmosphere, French menu, or fantastic roundabout service, L'Albatros has customers feeling like they are dining in France. It's also one of the five, fine, Cleveland restaurants of chef Zach Bruell.
L'Albatros is one of those restaurants where one may want to make reservations on a Saturday night, because chances are they'll be booked for the night. Guests may be arriving after a Severance Hall concert, a play downtown, or a CIA show, or they may just be students enjoying a well-primed meal - celebrating the end of another semester.
The menu may seem intimidating. Just take some time. Pick anything, and chances are you'll enjoy it. Everything on the menu is detailed and perfected - as it should be in a five-star restaurant.
Customers start their dinners with bread and a mustard spread. Savor the bread while looking for something to choose from because there are so many different choices. L'Albatros specializes in a variety of different types of food. It's not held down to just being a pasta, meat, or seafood restaurant. They serve everything with pride.
The braised leg of lamb with pasta risotto and rosemary jus speaks for itself - it just sounds like something waiting to be devoured. The lamb is cooked so perfectly and is so tender that it breaks apart easily, and the pasta risotto complements it extremely well.
The L'Albatros burger is absolutely delicious. Roasted peppers, caramelized onions and sauce béarnaise - egg, champagne vinegar and a white wine reduction - are piled on top for a burger like never before.
Yes, escargots is on the menu as an hors-d'oeuvre. Following escargots on the menu is French toast, but it's far from the typical breakfast meal. This is a wild mushroom salad appetizer. The sauce is deceiving, it looks and even tastes like chocolate and vanilla, but it's actually buttery sugar balsamic vinegar sauce.
If all that is too much, a calm and smooth potato soup may be more suitable. It's rather simple by comparison, with truffle butter, Parmesan, chives and - of course - potatoes.
Their hanger steak and frites is a pre-chopped steak with béarnaise sauce that comes with fries. They also do lobster, salmon, pizza, chicken and scallops. Each exquisite dish is constructed differently, whether baked, boiled, sautéed, and/or fried.
Even their fountain drink cups are funky and cool and come in a unique cylinder shape, extending the sense of fanciness in totality.
L'Albatros also serves many different kinds of drinks, imported wines, carbonated fever tree tonic and Ghirardelli hot chocolate.
The desert menu is incredible. Chocolate Napoleon is mouth watering with layers of whipped chocolate, fresh raspberries and crisp wafers. How does one attack something this gorgeous?!
Just take the fork and crack it. It may be hard to destroy the work of art, but eventually temptation wins over.
L'Albatros restaurant is exquisite and marvelously cool, and the food is absolutely delectable. It's highly recommended for anyone.
