Cleveland State University President Ronald Berkman announced in an email that the four remaining candidates for CSU's provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs will hold townhall meetings during the next two weeks.
These sessions are open to all students, staff and faculty, and will be located in the Main Classroom auditorium.
The first session will be on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at noon. Keith Moo-Young of California State University will be the provost candidate.
Moo-Young holds a Ph.D and Master of Science in civil-environmental engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a Masters of Technology Management from the University of Pennsylvania. He currently serves as the dean of nationally-renowned College of Engineering, Computer Science and Technology at California State University-Los Angeles. He previously served as the interim dean and associate dean for Research and Graduate Studies at Villanova University and as a professor at Lehigh University.
Session two will be on Thursday, Feb. 7 at noon. Ron Brown of Wayne State University will be the candidate.
Brown is currently the provost and senior vice president of Academic Affairs at Wayne State University and has been in that position since August 2010. Brown had previously served as dean of Temple University's College of Health Professions and Social Work from 2009-10 and dean of the College of Health Professions from 2004-09. Brown has taught at Emory University, University of Georgia, Georgia State University, the University of Houston, and the University of Illinois.
Brown holds a Ph.D from Georgia State University and a bachelor of arts from Emory University.
The third session will be on Tuesday, Feb. 12 and will feature Deirdre Mageean of the Council of Graduate Schools.
Mageean has served as provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs since 2005. Prior to that, she served as associate vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School of the University of Maine from 2002-05. She holds an M.A. in Sociology from the University of York and Ph.D from the The Open University in England.
The final session is on Thursday, Feb. 14 at noon. The candidate is David Francko of the University of Alabama.
Francko is associate provost and dean of the Graduate School at the University of Alabama. He received a Ph.D in Botany from Michigan State University. Before joining the University of Alabama, he was on the faculty at Miami University.
According to Berkman's press release, the candidates will give opening statements in which they explain their vision for CSU, how their experience and skills will aid them in accomplishing their mission, and outline areas that they believe CSU must improve in order to fully implement their vision.
The provost position has remained unfilled since summer of 2011, when Geoffrey Means resigned his position in order to be president at Northern Kentucky University. George Walker has served as the interim provost since.
CSU Student Government Association had previously held two forums last semester on Oct. 3 and Oct. 11 that saw nearly 200 total students. The third, scheduled for Oct. 15, was cancelled when President Barack Obama made a visit to the school for a stump speech. There was also a forum for faculty and staff on Oct. 11.
Berkman appointed a 17-member search committee that included faculty, staff, deans, vice presidents and the president of SGA.
The position should be selected by April and filled by August.
Students are encouraged to bring questions, concerns and valued input to all of the sessions.
