Cleveland State University's 2011-2012 basketball season officially began Saturday, Oct. 15 with the Midnight Madness event.

A tailgate party outside of Fenn Tower filled with food and raffles started the evening's events. The festivities continued in Woodling Gym with introductions to the men's and women's basketball teams. The intro included giveaways, a slam dunk contest and an autograph signing.

With CSU basketball right around the corner, the campus had the chance to meet their fellow athletes and coaches.

"Our goal is to give the students an early glimpse of what we are going to be working with this season and promote our teams," said women's basketball head coach Kate Peterson Abiad.

The excitement Abiad has for the season is because of how talented the women's team looks this year. The team has four skilled freshmen, plus veterans from the previous seasons.

"I am looking forward to making it to the NCAA tournament and contending for the conference championship," Abiad said.

Women's basketball will kick off their season with an exhibition game Nov. 1 against John Carroll University. Their regular season opener will take place Nov. 11, when the Lady Vikings will face Tennessee at home.

Players to keep an eye on this season are senior guard Janelle Adams and sophomore forward Andrea Hughes.

Freshman men's basketball player Ike Nwamu had the CSU crowd hyped as he soared exceptionally Saturday. The guard was the winner of the dunk contest.

Other participants in the contest were sophomore forwards Devon Long, Anton Grady, Ludovic Ndaye, and freshman forward Marlin Mason.

"I am looking forward to this season," Nwamu said. "I'm excited and blessed that I am a part of an exciting, talented group of people. Cleveland is a great city and I am enjoying interacting and networking."

The men's basketball season will begin Nov. 9 with an exhibition game against JCU. The Vikings will open their regular season at Vanderbilt Nov. 13, and two days later they will host Rio Grande in their home opener.

Players who look to show big performances this season are senior forwards Aaron Pogue, Devon Long, Anton Grady and freshman Ike Nwamu.
