The Cleveland Browns wrapped up the preseason Thursday night with a thrilling 13-10 victory over the Chicago Bears. Cleveland quarterback Colt McCoy was key, going a perfect 13-13 with 131 yards passing in the victory.
The Browns 2-2 preseason record matches much of their play throughout the four-week period. There were times where Browns fans thought maybe, just maybe, this could finally be the year to sneak into the playoffs. However, there were also times where we groaned and moaned at another turnover, and yet another chapter added to Cleveland sports heartbreak.
In the second and third preseason game—the two that mean the most for the progress of the first team— our Brownies lost back-to-back games against two of the worst teams in the league. The St. Louis Rams and Detroit Lions took preseason games two and three from Cleveland, even after strong performances from quarterback Jake Delhomme.
Signed as a free agent this off-season, Delhomme gave Cleveland fans much to look forward to this season at the quarterback position, as he finished the preseason 38-48 with 345 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions.
Backup quarterback Seneca Wallace made a strong case to be the starter after he flew through the pre- season accumulating a passer rating of 103.0, going 13 of 26 for 230 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.
The Browns have seen strong contributions on the offensive side as wide receivers Joshua Cribbs and Brian Robiskie, running backs Peyton Hillis and Jerome Harrison, fullback Lawrence Vickers and tight end Ben Watson, all added scores on the ground or through the air.
Defensively, newcomer T.J. Ward shined above all at the safety position and made a strong case to be on the field with 14 solo tackles and three assists. On defense, the Browns did allow a combined 54 points to the Rams and Lions. Take it for what it is worth Browns fans, and remember, it is just the preseason.
The regular season opens in a few shorts days on Sept. 12 at Tampa Bay and we will finally get a look at our real Brownies. Cleveland fans are known for saying, "Maybe next year!" Well, Browns fans, next year has arrived.
